Spring 2018 Internship at CIMA Center for Italian Modern Art

ABOUT:
Founded in 2013, the public non-profit CIMA is dedicated to promoting conversation and scholarship around twentieth century Italian art through annual exhibitions and diverse programming. CIMA situates Italian modern art in an expansive historic and cultural context, illuminating its continuing relevance to contemporary culture, and serves as an incubator of curatorial ideas for larger cultural institutions.

For its fifth season, CIMA presents the second ever solo exhibition in the United States of work by Alberto Savinio (1891–1952). On view through June 23, 2018, Alberto Savinio features twenty-five rarely seen works, primarily produced by the artist while he was living in Paris in the late 1920s and early 1930s. While the exhibited paintings are characterized by Savinio’s vivid color palette, his fantastical interpretation of mythology and voyage, and his eccentric vision of landscape, the late lithographs nod to the artist’s illustrious literary career. Continuing CIMA’s practice of including work by contemporary artists in its installations, the exhibition also features select sculptures and prints by French American artist Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010). This juxtaposition brings to the fore the two artists’ commonalities, including their flirtation with Surrealism, a shared interest in the subconscious, and, most significantly, the profound influence that familial relations had on their respective artistic imagery.

CIMA’s galleries are open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays: Fellow-led tours, which begin with an espresso and conversation, are offered at 11am and 2pm; open hours are 1pm to 6pm. CIMA Members are free to visit the exhibition at any point during the week. Public and VIP programs occur predominantly on weeknights, approximately once a week.
