Seeking music director, choreographer, stage manager, costume designer and lighting designer for an Equity Showcase production (pending approval) of a new musical based on the 13th century classic Chinese comedy Romance of the Western Chamber by Xi Xiang Ji. Set designer has been hired. All positions will be paid according to Equity guidelines on a favored nations basis.

The show, featuring a cast of 11, has been adapted into a musical by Howard Rubinstein, with music by Max Lee, based on traditional Chinese folk melodies. The director is Shela Xoregos, set designer Sal Perrotta. Producers are Bob Ost and Wildly Productive Productions in association with Xoregos Performing Company, with support from the Confucius Institute, San Diego.

Auditions will be in July, rehearsals will begin in August, and the first performance is scheduled for September 14th at TADA! Theatre, 15 W. 28th Street. It will run approx. 15 performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays at 8pm, Saturdays at 2pm and Sundays at 3pm.

Known as "China's most popular love comedy," and also known in some versions as The Story of the Western Wing, Romance of the Western Chamber is the story of a young couple from different classes consummating their love without parental approval, and has been seen both as a "lover's bible" and shocking. It takes place during the 9th century Tang dynasty, one of the more liberal periods of Chinese history. Effort will be made to achieve a feeling of authenticity and make this a rare opportunity for New York audiences to experience a work of classic Chinese theater in a modern interpretation.

MUSIC DIRECTOR ideally will teach score, play rehearsals and performances, and be able to do arrangements and reduce a 7-piece score to 3 pieces (there is a separate fee for arrangements). A feel for Eastern music would be helpful, and ideas for incorporating guzheng or other colorings are welcome. Needed immediately for discussion of the score reduction, then starting in July for auditions.

CHOREOGRAPHER experienced with silks and familiar with classic Chinese dance forms for several duets and a stylized dance fight between two warriors. Choreography not authentic but should suggest it.

STAGE MANAGER may be union or non-union, but have excellent managerial and scheduling skills. Experience required, and a calm disposition. If possible, you may also function as tech liaison and help coordinate production meetings as well as rehearsals. It’s negotiable. Needed starting in July for auditions.

COSTUME DESIGNER will have access to TDF Costume Collection, but may need to build many of the costumes. We are hoping for an authentic Tang dynasty feel for 4 principals, though creative interpretation is welcome and wanted. There will be choreography so experience with designing for dance is a plus.

LIGHTING DESIGNER will also hang and focus and possibly run lights. You will work closely with the set designer Sal Perrotta to create magic. This show needs to look beautiful. Familiarity with Tada Theatre and their lighting resources is a plus.

Interviews will be end of May, early June. Please send resume with an email introducing yourself (and any reasons why you are particularly right or interested in this project) to producer Bob Ost at – include any conflict dates you might have, and when you will be ready to give full attention to this production. Please put the position sought in your subject line.
