NYPL Digital is responsible for providing strategic leadership across the whole of the New York Public Library through its digital services and operations. Seeking: an experienced mobile applications developer to help reinvent eBook discovery and access for public libraries. The New York Public Library is building a small, empowered product team to develop a mobile platform for ebook lending and reading that could serve as model for public libraries across North America. The ideal candidate is that rare intersection of software super geek and social do:gooder seeking to improve public access to knowledge and information. If youA?re game to help re:imagine the public library eBook experience, then make that vision real (and scaleable), then we want you to be a part of this team. Play a key role in the design and development of an mobile application platform for eBooks and Library digital content for iOS and Android.Participate in the overall maintenance of the application, including bug fixes, performance enhancements and run:time production supportWork with server:side engineers to define service APIs to support the mobile applicationsWrite clean, well:documented and unit:tested codeAs needed, generate technical documentation for various aspects of the applicationWork with front:end (UI) developers to integrate server:side code with UI artifactsEngage with the eBook hacker community through blogging, public speaking, hackathons etc.Accountability and Professionalism : Demonstrates enthusiasm for and commitment to the position and accepts responsibility for personal actions.Customer Service : Commits to meeting the expectations of internal and external customers. Listens and responds effectively to customer questions; resolves customer problems to the customerA?s satisfaction; respects all internal and external customers.Collaboration and Teamwork : Supports a positive team environment in which members participate, respect and cooperate with each other to receive desired results.Job:Specific Knowledge and Skills : Plans, prioritizes, and organizes work effectively to produce measurable results; keeps current with and effectively applies new work methods, skills and technologies to complete work.At least 2:3 years of experience writing both native and web mobile applications for iOS, Android or both platformsExpert:level knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, Object:oriented Javascript, Objective:C, Java, and C++Familiarity with a typed functional language like ocaml or haskell is an advantageExperience with WebKit, and ePub file format is a plusHas previously built client:server applicationsStrong experience in managing the constraints in mobile applications : optimizing speed and efficiency with storage, memory usage, power management, battery usage, etc.Keen eye for design detailStrong appreciation for architecture, problem solving, testing, and agile developmentBachelorA?s degree in Computer Science or related discipline is preferredPassion for building high:quality mobile applicationsSelf:starter, with ability to work under pressure on multiple tasksWrite and speak as well as you can code (there are often opportunities to write and present about our work inside and outside The Library)High energy and a positive attitude in a fast:paced, entrepreneurial, start:up environmentStrong desire to make a huge impact on how the public is able to access knowledge.Office settingOffice hours, weekend and evenings as needed occasionally.Non Union
