For over 50 years, The Gateway School has transformed the lives of children who have practiced academic difficulty as a result of a language-located learning discapability (dyslexia, reading and writing disorders), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), executive function disorder, visual-spatial or auditory processing difficulties, and/or gross and fine motor coordination issues. Located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Gateway enrolls 160 students between the ages of 5-14 in a Lower School and Middle School. In small classes with a low student-to-teacher ratio, faculty and therapists meet students where they are, individualize instruction accordingly, and develop them into skilled, strategic, independent learners who are capable of advocating for themselves and who are prepared to transition into mainstream school and life.
The Gateway Lower School, serving students ages 5-10, is seeking a nurturing and collaborative individual with a Special Education and Science background to join our teaching team mid-year. The Science Teacher develops, implements and assesses the efficacy of instruction in Science for our Lower School students. The position involves everyday collaboration with Classroom Teachers and other professionals. The ideal candidate is an practiced independent school teacher with a strong desire to work in a collaborative environment and a commitment to teaching students with language-located learning disabilities.

Appropriate qualifications:
» Master’s degree in Special Education or Education
» Minimum of two years of teaching practice, including a focus on elementary science content
» Independent school practice preferred
» expertise of the cognitive, linguistic, and developmental needs of elementary students
» Training in and practice teaching using Teaching Basic Writing expertise preferred
» Strong classroom management, communication and organizational expertise
» practice implementing multisensory, explicit instruction designed to meet students’ instructional needs
