Position Description:

Corporate Communications is the steward of AIG’s global brand and reputation. We tell the AIG story— create and drive compelling narratives, campaigns, and announcements around AIG’s business —both within and outside the company, and around the world. Our audiences include AIG employees, clients and communities, investors and the public. AIG’s core businesses include Commercial Insurance and Consumer Insurance, as well as Other Operations. Commercial Insurance comprises two modules – Liability and Financial Lines, and Property and Special Risks. Consumer Insurance comprises four modules – Individual Retirement, Group Retirement, Life Insurance and Personal Insurance.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Director of External Communications to lead communications for our Consumer Insurance business. This will include establishing external communications strategy and overseeing its execution to support Consumer’s business and policy goals as well as promote and protect AIG’s external reputation and brand. Design and deliver creative communications campaigns and narratives. Drive awareness of our products and services through stories in relevant publications and through awareness campaigns. Develop programs to build Consumer executives as thought leaders in their respective space and manage executive speaking engagements. Collaborate with the Consumer communications team to create and repurpose content for multi-channel use across AIG’s external digital platforms and employee-focused Intranet.

Build and maintain relationships with key media. Draft press releases, public statements, write press communications and pitch. The role requires a communications leader with proven media pitching skills and media outreach experience, and a strong record of placing high-impact stories in national media, key regional newspapers, broadcast, and financial services industry trade publications across a wide spectrum (financial advisory/retirement, plan sponsor and asset management, high net worth and personal property insurance, among others). Foster relationships and lead/coordinate communication initiatives with external public relations agencies representing Consumer businesses.

Contribute to enterprise-wide, Corporate media relations initiatives. Interface with team leading media monitoring and analysis for AIG. Serve as a corporate spokesperson to the news media, along with the media relations team. Collaborate with Corporate marketing in relation to social media, brand development, and corporate website.

Specific responsibilities will include:

• In partnership with the Head of Consumer Communications, develop a comprehensive communications program and implement external public and media relations efforts
• Collaborate with Head of Consumer Communications and the lead communicators for the Consumer modules in the development of a press strategy for Consumer and its modular businesses (including written and electronic media outreach, crisis management and relationship development; drafting and dissemination of press releases, briefing documents, media training, and assist in the oversight of any external public relations agency relationships)
• Assist in the development of PR plans for the modular businesses and help position these executives as industry thought leaders
• Draft/manage campaigns/releases/talking points for media interviews/media statements and all public relations initiatives
• Research opportunities for positive press coverage and speaking opportunities, i.e. industry conferences, media conferences, etc.
• Organize all materials related to public relations function (editorial calendars, media lists, press releases, reporter research, etc.)
• Train people to act as spokespeople.
• Coordinate all targeted publication listings and rankings reports
• Oversee the gathering of media and analyst coverage, analysis, and storage of clips and files.
• Collaborate closely with the rest of the AIG Corporate Communications team, particularly media relations colleagues from other segments of AIG


Position Requirements:
• 12+ years of corporate communications experience, with heavy emphasis on external communications.
• High degree of written and verbal communication competencies
• 5 years in a senior media relations role
• A high level of self-motivation and independence will be critical.
• Interpersonal skills necessary to work continuously, effectively and skillfully with senior executives across AIG.12 or more years of corporate communications experience, with heavy emphasis on external communications.
• Bachelors Degree; Masters preferrred
