Do you like writing about YouTube and getting paid for it?

The Scout is on the hunt for experienced writers that are fascinated by the world of YouTube and online video, who are interested in providing readers with stimulating, inspiring, and thought-provoking articles.

OUR GOAL is to be a trusted destination for new media insights and knowledge, authored by digital media creators and industry experts

OUR TONE is personal and authentic -- we're not afraid to take a critical, analytical look at digital media and poke fun at the industry, though we maintain an encouraging, optimistic, open-minded, and professional voice.

OUR CONTENT focuses on high quality content that represents a variety of genres and a diversity of viewpoints and backgrounds. It is accessible to the interested viewer and beginner creator, yet useful to the industry professional.

If you are up for the challenge and would like to write for us, email us at the address below with 2 writing samples and 3 story ideas. We provide a per-article fee that varies by format and complexity.

Content Guidelines
- All submissions must be original content that you own the rights to.
- Please fact check your story and provide sources for all your info.
- If you include images, you must own the rights to them.
- Images must be high-resolution and be at least 1456 pixels wide.
- We prefer drafts as Google docs so that editors can provide feedback .

After you submit a story idea:

- An editor will review your submission and determine whether it is a potential fit. Once we accept your concept, the editor will notify you and work with you to arrive at a deadline to submit a draft.
- Once you have submitted a draft, an editor will work closely with you on things like tone, structure, and style. When revisions are complete, we will schedule your article for publication.

- LISTICLE ARTICLES -

List of creators / shows in a genre -- This format highlights talent within niche content categories that people may not know about. Topics can include highly searched categories (ex: video essays), or ones that people may not know exist (game music).

List of creators related to topical subjects / events -- This format highlights talent that relates to an event or topic in popular culture. Topics / themes can be related to holidays, news events, popular shows/movies, etc.

List of examples of a single strategy or technique -- This format highlights creative strategies / techniques for creators. Strategies can include production techniques, monetization approaches, and creative tactics.

List of creative videos around a theme or time period -- This format showcases unique and creative content within a theme or time period. Articles in this format should give a brief summary of each video that is featured.

- EXPLAINER ARTICLES -

Explain the history of a format or niche community -- This format showcases communities / formats to share what they are and why they are popular. Topics can include large communities such as gaming, or niche communities like ASMR.

Example: What is 'unboxing'? Why do people do it, and why do people watch?

Explain the history & popularity of a specific creator -- This format aims to showcase specific creators to explain what they make and why they are popular. Articles are aimed at readers who are familiar with the creator but don't understand their popularity.

Example: Who is Jake Paul, and why in the world is he popular?

Explain the content landscape of a geographic area -- This format showcases creator communities around the world and what makes them unique. Showcase popular creators/formats across genres within each region.

Example: What type of digital content is popular in India, and who is making it?

Explain a strategy or technique and how to do it -- This format provides detailed instructions of specific strategies or techniques. Topics can include content strategies, monetization strategies, promotion strategies, with multiple examples.

Example: How to launch a new web series on YouTube

- FEATURE ARTICLES -

In-depth profile of a single creator -- This format aims to highlight creators that are especially talented & unique. Interviews on the inspiration behind a video/show, the process to make it, the creator's goals, and how it went.

Example: Bernie Su: Transmedia Pioneer

In-depth analysis of a large digital media trend -- This format breaks down large over-arching trends across the digital media industry. Trends that creators/viewers/industry professionals are either unaware of or seeking to understand in greater detail.

Example: Why shows are the future of YouTube

Success story of a single video / show -- This case study format explains why a specific video or show became so successful & popular. Articles should identify specific strategies / events that contributed to this success.
