ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:

Founded in 1857, and with a current base of more than 5,000 members, the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter (AIA New York) is the largest, oldest, and most influential chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

AIA New York is dedicated to three goals: design excellence, public outreach, and professional development. The organization achieves these goals in part through the work of its 27 program committees. Through discussion, advocacy, policy making and development, event and exhibition planning, and other endeavors, the program committees are the foundation from which the Chapter positions itself in the field of architecture.

In 2003, AIA New York opened a public resource space with its charitable affiliate, the Center for Architecture. The Center for Architecture (CFA) is New York City’s premier public space for exhibitions, discussion, and professional exchange on architecture, design, and the built environment. With multiple galleries, a lecture hall, library and conference rooms, the CFA serves as a vital place where the public and design professionals come together.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Program Manager has primary responsibility for the execution of a member-volunteer driven array of events and projects geared to meeting the educational, networking, and resource needs of the Chapter. Projects to administer may include:

• Juried awards programs, including the AIANY Design Awards and “New Practices New York” Competition;
• Symposia and publications related to critical issues in architecture and the built environment; and
• Leadership development training initiatives that support the further professionalization of the member base.

The Program Manager will engage project management skills such as goal definition, budgeting, staging, marketing and post-event evaluation; utilize strong communication skills; and a maintain a member service attitude.

The Program Manager supervises the Committees Coordinator, works directly with volunteer Board VPs, and manages special projects that enhance member value and/or appreciation of architectural design excellence. The incumbent will also coordinate with AIANY and Center for Architecture staff and provide administrative support to selected elective committees of the AIA New York Chapter.

The Program Manager reports to the Managing Director and works closely with the Executive Director to achieve these goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Three years of experience in an association or professional membership organization
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Well organized and detail oriented
• Project management, including fundraising, timeline and administrative support skills
• Ability to handle and prioritize multiple, simultaneous projects
• Excellent command of Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and database management.

PREFERENCE FACTORS:

While not required qualifications for this position, the ideal candidate will have one or more of the following:
• Experience with juried award program(s)
• Volunteer management experience
• Demonstrated interest in architecture and urban affairs
• Salesforce Experience

All full-time employees of AIA New York receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes employer-paid medical, dental, vision, and life insurance after a 90 day evaluation period. Employees with 1 year of full-time service are eligible for a 401(k) plan that includes a 3% employer contribution.
