The Possibility Project operates year-long programs which bring together vastly diverse groups of youth from the five boroughs of New York City. Participants go through an intense creative process through which they write an original musical based on stories which come from their lives and their ideas for a better world. They also create community action projects where they take those ideas and act on them in their city. Using a proven arts-driven curriculum which combines diversity, violence prevention, problem-solving, and leadership training, The Possibility Project promotes personal and social change through a unique youth-led program.

About the position...

Working with an Artistic Director, a Production Team of youth leaders and the cast, the Choreographer is responsible for teaching movement and dance to the cast (many of whom are non-dancers) and preparing them for the dance and movement portions of the performance. The Choreographer also initiates, executes and manages the dance production and dance activities of The Possibility Project. The Choreographer will create and produce finished dance pieces and creative activity that will culminate in an original musical written and produced by the youth themselves and based on the lives, identities, experiences and lessons of the participants.

The ideal candidate…

Will be well-versed in many styles of dance and will be attuned to youth trends. The Choreographer will have a good body of experience in choreographing for, and working with, large numbers of young people. Experience and enjoyment working with youth is imperative. The Choreographer will be expected to work to a standard of artistic excellence, be dedicated, energetic and committed to our young people and to social change.

The hours of the position are finally determined by the needs of the performance. However, here is a tentative schedule: the choreographer will be in rehearsal once every 2 weeks from October through February, once a week in March and April and then at most rehearsals as we get closer to the show which will premiere in late April or early May
