The YMCA of Greater New York reaches half a million New Yorkers through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The West Side YMCA is seeking qualified individuals who will play a critical role in the successful operation of the Summer Arts Camp program. The Day Camp Arts Senior Counselor will be responsible for providing a safe and positive environment for school age children, to provide opportunities for learning, interaction, and academic/ personal growth.

• Ensure the health, safety and well-being of participants in the program, by providing appropriate supervision at all times.
• Work with Arts Camp Director to manage ratio, create strong and open lines of communication and assist in the management of staff throughout the camp day.
• Understand, maintain, and ensure that participants follow Risk Management and safety procedures.
• Develop and implement engaging and educational activities, collaborate with co-counselors and Arts Specialist / Teaching Artists, towards preparing of culminating events / community sharing.
• Perform specific scheduled assignments, including but not limited to, swimming, arrival and / or departure, and lunch duty.
• Support the planning and implementation of all camp activities, including but not limited to, assisting Arts Specialists during classes, providing supplemental arts instruction during counseling time, field trips, in-camp events, and culminating performances.
• Work cooperatively with all program staff.
• Provide support to Activity Specialists with activity implementation.
• Promote an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces the diversity of all staff and participants.
• Create and maintain a strength-based, youth-focused atmosphere that is consistent and sensitive to the needs of participants with learning, emotional or behavioral differences.
• Maintain accurate program documentation (attendance, sign in / out forms, behavior / incident / accident reports, as appropriate).
• Understand and communicate the YMCA’s core values and the goals of the Arts Camp program to staff, participants, and care givers.
• Develop and maintain positive relationships with parents and guardians, through regular communication, about their child’s strengths and areas of growth.
• Keep immediate supervisor informed of any concerns regarding participants, staff or the facility, on a daily basis.
• Adhere to all Department of Health, YMCA of Greater New York, and funder standards, expectations and regulations.
• Attend all required pre-camp trainings. Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings and special events.

• High School diploma or equivalent required; college degree in arts discipline or working towards degree in the arts preferred.
• Minimum of three years of experience working with youth and experience in one or more of the art forms: dance, theater, visual arts and /or music.
• General knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Knowledge of Access, Adobe PageMaker and Photoshop preferred.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must be prepared to go into the pool!
